Job Description
Hawtins Stud is a large Hanoverian dressage stud. We primarily offer our horses for sale at four and five years of age when they are well established in their training and have successfully started their competitive careers. The main responsibility of this role is the care and management of all horses including the competition horses, mares, foals and youngstock. The role will also involve working with the young horses in their early stages of training on the ground, lungeing and long-reining. There is also the requirement to prepare foals and youngstock for shows including the BEF Futurity and to present the horses at these events.
We do not stand any stallions. At foaling time, we have alarms and cameras so it is not necessary to routinely sit up through the night watching mares due to foal.
Ideally, the person in this role will be, or could develop into, someone capable of ensuring the smooth running of the stud on a day-to-day basis.
Requirements
High standards of turnout and care are essential. Experience in handling youngstock, lungeing and long-reining in the early stages of training young horses is important. Ability to plait and prepare horses for shows and present them. Practical experience with foaling would be advantageous. This is not a general groom role or a trainee role. Genuine experience with handling youngstock is essential.
Required Skills
Driving license; Handling Youngstock; Lunging; Bandaging; Trim/Pull.
Required Expertise
Stud.
Accommodation
Accomodation is in a well-maintained and centrally heated cottage. Shared living accomodation. Good sized, well appointed bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Benefits
Excellent salary, training as required and first class accomodation.
The Facility
Large, recently built indoor complex with stables, tack room, wash bays, pits for muck and haylage trailers, staff room and viewing gallery, laundry room and 20m x 60m indoor school. Separate, but linked unit with boxes for mares and foals.
Additional yard with a further eight stables including four foaling boxes.
Large oval horse walker, large fenced lunge arena, winter wood chip turnout pen and a 20m x 60m outdoor arena. Nearby turnout paddocks for stabled horses.
Five large purpose-built barns with linked, outdoor woodchip pens for winter housing of mares and youngstock.
100 acres with woodland.
We do not stand any stallions and it is very different to working on a thoroughbred racing stud. Members of the team are not expected to take part in watching mares due to foal or assisting in foaling.
