Job Description
Hawtins stud is a large Hanoverian dressage stud. The stud produces horses for sale and competition from four years of age. All our horses are well handled from an early age and have super temperaments. This role is similar to the Young Horse Trainer and Competition Rider role but with the additional responsibility for starting each year’s crop of three year olds. We have a thorough, structured and appropriate approach to the early schooling work of the young horses to ensure that it is a positive learning experience and to enable them to make a seamless transition to ridden work. We do not believe in the ‘crash-test dummy’ approach. The fantastic temperament of our horses makes the backing process incredibly straightforward.
The rest of the time is focused on training and competing the horses at various levels.
Regular training is provided for horses and riders each week with the emphasis on adherence to the scales of training. Our horses are exciting prospects for the future and offer our riders the chance to ride top quality horses.
Although riding is the primary focus of this role, there is also the requirement to take part in the care and management of the horses.
There is a good team atmosphere and first class working environment and facilities. For more information about the stud, see www.hawtins.com
Requirements
Applicants for this role should have a good background in training and competing dressage horses and in starting youngsters. This would be a good opportunity for someone looking to move on from a working pupil position.
Required Skills
Riding; Driving license; Schooling; Lunging; Bandaging; Plaiting; Clipping; Trim/Pull; Starting/Breaking; Competing.
Required Expertise
Dressage; Eventing.
Accommodation
Accommodation is of a high standard in a well-maintained and centrally heated cottage. Sorry no pets. The yard and cottage are non-smoking areas.
Benefits
Attractive salary, regular training, high quality accomodation, livery of own horse if applicable.
The Facility
Large, recently built indoor complex with stables, tack room, wash bays, pits for muck and haylage trailers, staff room and viewing gallery, laundry room and 20m x 60m indoor school. Separate, but linked unit with boxes for mares and foals.
Additional yard with a further eight stables including four foaling boxes.
Large oval horse walker, large fenced lunge arena, winter wood chip turnout pen and a 20m x 60m outdoor arena. Nearby turnout paddocks for stabled horses.
Five large purpose-built barns with linked, outdoor woodchip pens for winter housing of mares and youngstock.
100 acres with woodland.
We do not stand any stallions and it is very different to working on a thoroughbred racing stud. Members of the team are not expected to take part in watching mares due to foal or assisting in foaling.
