Job Description
Groom & Training Assistant reports to the Head Trainer/Manager on this Sport Horse Breeding Farm. Private farm - not a boarding facility and we do not accept outside horses for training. Duties include feeding, haying, turnout, holding horses for the farrier, vet, administration of meds, equine first aid, deworming, assist with grooming/tacking/cooling out horses for the Trainer. Other duties include occasional transport, assisting with foaling out mares, foal handling, halter training, introducing youngsters to grooming, clippers, and periodic grooming of broodmares (they need loving too.) There is minimal stall cleaning - we already have a full time person to clean stalls, water horses, fix fences, etc. Oversee farm, horses, pets when owner and Trainer are out of town. This position does not include showing horses at this time. We need you to hold down the fort while we are gone.
Good opportunity to learn more about breeding/foaling, starting, dressage. Background in dressage or English disciplines not necessary but appreciated. May assist in groundwork/riding/conditioning IF appropriate. Our horses range on average 15.1 - 16.1hh with few over 16.1hh. Some have very short backs and need riders who would take a smaller saddle seat. For this reason, IF you are wanting to ride, we are looking for an appropriately sized rider that can fit the smaller, less mature horses (appx. max of 5'6", 145lbs). If you do not want to ride then height/weight are not important. There MAY be potential to jump some horses but we will not have any ready for jumping until 2013 or 2014 at the earliest.
We've learned that job seekers who use the "lazy" automatic email option aren't serious about finding a job and just waste our time. If you are sincerely interested in this position we want to hear from you so please take the time to send a personalized email message showing that you have some genuine interest and initiative.
Thank you and we look forward to hearing from
Requirements
Must have experience taking care of multiple horses on a daily basis, be a self-starter, motivated, reliable and work well without constant supervision. We are willing to put the time into filling in any gaps in your knowledge/experience so long as you already have a good foundation in horsemanship.
Required Skills
Driving license.
Accommodation
Let's discuss. Temporary small living quarters available when we are out of town and you need to stay onsite, however, we do not have permanent housing available.
Benefits
TBD. Sorry, we are absolutely maxed out on space right now and do not have room for any outside horses. If you need to bring your horse with you it will be necessary to find a place to board off site.
The Facility
Private and modest farm engaged in breeding, foaling, showing and sales of Trakehners and Appaloosa Sport Horses for dressage, eventing, show jumping. We are located in Shelby County which is probably the most English discipline populated county in the Birmingham area. We do not board outside horses or offer lessons to the public. We do have a barn with 4 stalls and a foaling shedrow with 2 stalls which is close to the house. Most horses here are on 24 hour turnout, however, we do stall for injured/sick horses, introducing young horses to stalls, rotating stallions for paddock turnout and for foaling out mares. We usually have about 3-4 foals a year but are increasing in our foal production as we have started standing our young Appaloosa Sport Horse stallion and offering him to the public. There is currently a 200'x120' grass arena, a sand roundpen and we are looking to put in a large covered roundpen. Youngstock are shown in USDF and USEA shows.
