Job Description
If your goal is a career as a top level Show Jumping Trainer and Rider. If you want to become a comprehensive and intuitive horseman, who can take a clueless youngster to as far as his abilities permit without damaging his soundness, sanity and keeness of atitude. Here is an opportunity for you to work and train with an experienced and respected Hunter/Jumper trainer. This Working Student position calls for lots and lots of riding, and you must be capable of riding and schooling athletic and powerful young Show Jumpers both on the flat and over fences. Some grooming is involved, but mostly, you will be riding under the direction of a trainer/mentor who is invested in many aspects of the sport. Showing is a real possibility.Your compensation will be primarily educational, but we offer room and board for you and your horse, a positive environment working with nice people who possess a sense of humor, and some opportunities to earn a modest amount of money. Think of this as graduate school, where you will learn the skills and attitude of a true professional. The work is sometimes strenuous, and the hours can be long, but the rewards can be terrific-if a horseman's life is your calling.
Requirements
I don't expect applicants to be professional level riders at the beginning of their internship, but they must be skilled enough to be comfortable jumping three foot courses at the very least, and they must possess the desire and the nerve to jump bigger fences within a few months. We compete at both unrated and USEF "A" shows, and show riding is possible.
Required Skills
Riding; Equine First-Aid; Handling Youngstock; Schooling; Lunging; Bandaging; Clipping; Teaching; Trim/Pull; Exercising.
Required Expertise
Riding School; Showing; Show Jumping; Flatwork.
Accommodation
There is a clean, sunny bedroom, and you will have the use of your own private bathroom. Only my husband and myself live in our home, though we do have three dogs (2 Jack Russells and a Mastiff) that live in the house with us. We have wireless Internet in the house. We live in a rural area, not far from a small city, and we are close to the I-5 corridore, so we are not isolated, but this is not a fast paced city environment, with lots of nightlife.
Benefits
Free Room and Board in a private room and bath in our home. Board and Training/Lessons on your horse, and all lessons and supervised riding on my horses. The value of this is about $1500 per month. We will pay you in cash for any teaching/instruction that you perform, and for some tasks such as full body clipping, and house/dog sitting, and any heavy barn chores. There is a full time barn worker who does most of this work.
The Facility
Located in a rural area of Northern California, we breed and train Sporthorses to sell. Most of the young horses are headed for the Jumper ring, but we have some Hunters, Equitation Horses, Eventers and an occasional Dressage Horse. The facility is very much a working horse farm. There are some clients with horses in training, but mostly, there are very fancy and athletic young horses to be started and shown.
We are located in one of the most beautiful parts of California. The farm has many oak trees, rolling hills, and green irrigated pastures. A creek runs along the full length of the property. We have a huge arena with a very large inventory of show quality jumps. The all-weather footing is perfect, and never slippery. In the summer, it is watered daily so that there is no dust. We have a 20 metre Round Pen as well. The rest of the 22 acre property is made up of large turn-out paddocks. Most are irrigated, and all of them have abundant trees and shelters.
