Qualifications
Completed an online course via Coursera, "Equine Welfare and Management", provided by the University of California, Davis. Also as part of a Biological Sciences degree, completed an optional Equine Science module, focussing heavily on nutrition, health and management. Strong interest in completing BHS exams.
Duties of Current Occupation
I am a volunteer Shift Lead with a local horse rescue, where I am responsible for horse care, stable management, and supervising and assisting other volunteers, currently on at least 4 shifts per week.
Equine Work Experience
I have been volunteering with SAFE since 2018, and have been a Shift Lead since 2020, currently committed to four shifts a week, but covering additional shifts when required, as well as taking on extra tasks outside of shifts (e.g. attending to hold or trot up for vet visits). As a Shift Lead I am responsible for carrying out and overseeing all day-to-day tasks including turning out and bringing in, changing rugs, picking out feet and grooming, mucking out, poo-picking fields, feeding, hay and water, checking for general safety of fields, stables and the yard, and basic first aid or specific medical care as required/following guidance and instruction.
Specialities
I have strong experience efficiently and quickly mucking out stables, poo-picking fields, and making up feeds, as well as generally maintaining a safe and tidy yard. Through volunteering I have experience handling foals and youngsters through to senior horses, as well as nervous horses and those who have come from limited or no contact with humans and are at various stages of their rehabilitation.
Type of Ride Work
I have previously taken weekly riding lessons for 10 years, from the age of 8 to 18. I have not ridden regularly since then, but I was confident at walk/trot/canter and over small jumps/courses, with a preference for flat work. These were predominantly typical riding school horses, though some were green.
