Qualifications

I started doing BHS Stage 1 and 2, but I left the school before I could complete the exam. I still have all the content from these, and would like to have the chance to pick it up again.

Duties of Current Occupation

Recent graduate at Aberystwyth University with a BSc Zoology, looking to specialise with horses, and working with the public.

Equine Work Experience

I volunteering for Riding for the Disabled Association whilst doing my Duke of Edinburgh award. This improved my confidence and skill-set in both my communication and teaching ability due to the differing requirements of the riders. This was the first type of work I had done with either horses or children, and it gave me a different insight into a future career. From this, I did long term volunteering at my school/sixth form Equestrian Centre, where I did everything from mucking out, cleaning tack, helping with lessons and a bit of teaching. I genuinely enjoyed doing everything, and learned a huge amount, both about horses and the public. There would often be times that I would be there on my own, and have trust of the Yard Manager to take care of the facilities. I helped with Summer School for children visiting from abroad. My jobs were the same, but with some initial communication difficulties. All the students improved massively in their riding and language; I was very proud!

Specialities

Experience working with the public, both children and adults. Volunteered for a Small Breeds Farm Park, always interacting with children and adults. I loved getting and answering questions from the public about animals and when children would ask to interact with animals.

Able to think on my feet and adapt to change as situations progress. A few children got trapped in a double gate with some goats, and I quickly controlled the situation; the goats were returned, and the children were ok.

Type of Ride Work

I can walk, trot, canter, and pop a small jump. I have done lots of hacking (roads, woodlands, welsh terrain, open fields). I have also done some lunging, both with and without a rider. I have also done a small amount of riding in a Gymkhana, near the end of a local equestrian show that I was volunteering at.

Competition Details

Although I have not participated in competitions, I have helped out at some organised by the school Equestrian Centre I volunteered at. This was interesting, as it was very different to helping at the yard. I made sure all the riders were prepared, checking things were running smoothly. The competition was then moved to the school's own equestrian centre, after a 60x40 arena was built. This meant I was also partially responsible for getting all the school's own riders and horses ready.
