I have been riding and around horses since the age of 5. Mainly as a hobby through the school years, I attended different riding schools to learn. On finishing secondary school, I had already identified the course which I wanted to take at Duchy College. Finally the course included live-in Duty Weeks which are the heart and soul of Duchy courses. We would live in during 14 duty weeks per year and take care of the 32 horses which were kept on site I progressed to Yard Head Supervisor for my year, being responsible for care to 16 horses directly, and then the coaching and reporting for up to 7 student colleagues. All tasks related to care of the Horses were carried out, including Grooming, Mucking-out, routine health checks, replenishment of feeds and forage, cleaning and organisation of tack, care for own health and safety. Additionally in Year 2, I was looking after one horse for Riding for the Disabled which included hacking out, schooling, grooming, mucking out and day to day care.
Hacking at least 4 times a week every week for the last 12 months.
Flat work, for about 45 minutes, 3 times a week. I would plan my own lessons, depending on what I wanted to work on with a certain horse. Whether that was Rythm, Suppleness, Balance, Straightness or Impulsion.
Jumping, Cross country. We would do this once or twice a week, and focus on Rhythm and Tempo. I always enjoyed this aspect of riding more because of the adrenaline and the concentration.
