While I am currently out of work, I previously volunteered at Ravelrig RDA for 2 years. This gave me lots of hands on experience working with horses. My responsibilities included: grooming, tacking up, mucking out, and feeding.

I have experience working with a wide age range of horses as well as working with a wide range horses with different temperaments during my 2 years of volunteering. Working with Raverlrig RDA (riding for the disabled) gave me experience managing these horses around groups of vulnerable people and ensuring everyone was kept safe which meant always being aware of what's happening. Being in tune with the horses was essential as they can be easily spooked.

I have experience keeping the yard clean and tidy as Raverlrig RDA had a very high standards and wanted to make sure they were always well presented. This was especially important as the people who came had disabilities and were vulnerable, so cleanliness was very important and hazards needed to be kept under control and monitored. Everything had to be put away after being used to avoid accidents. Because this standard was so high, I learnt to do it very quickly so that it was all done in time.

While working with horses I had to adapt to their temperament. Some of the horses were very friendly and easy to work with, while others were a bit more temperamental. Their moods could also change day to day. One horse in particular was very grumpy and threw me off one day - I got straight back on (once he had calmed down) so I wouldn't be scared to get on in the future and also so that he learnt that throwing tantrums doesn't get what you want.
