Qualifications
I have got a extended diploma in equine management. This qualification taught me about the biology of horses, nutrition, improved my riding and gave me more experience with the overall management and looking after different horses as the college had a variety of different horses including cobs, thoroughbreds, sports horses, welsh cobs, ex polo ponies, horses with different allergies etc.
Duties of Current Occupation
I am currently in University doing equine studies. The course I am doing is called Bloodstock and performance horse management which is a blend between science and business and equine performance.
Equine Work Experience
I have worked at a riding school and livery yard where I had to to do pony rides with little children and disabled people, I have had to lead horses in walk trot and canter sometimes having to hold the riders leg for extra balance in all 3 paces meaning I am good at doing multiple tasks at once. I would usually ride any new ponies/ horses coming into the school to ensure they are safe for other riders or horses and ponies that needed to be trained before coming into the school. I have ridden ponies from 12 hh to horses up to 17hh. I have had to give out feeds to the horses, fill up and hang Haynes up, change water, lead multiple horses in and out from the field at once, I would also sweep the yard ensuring it's tidy and pick up phone calls to book people in for riding lessons.
Specialities
I have worked with 1 foal and partly looked after a stallion. I have loaded and unloaded a stallion before. I am quick at what I do however also precise, I like to look after horses I am responsible for as if they were my own.
Type of Ride Work
I have ridden different types of horses. I have ridden school masters, problem horses which included bucking, rearing, lazy and strong horses and spooky horses. I have also ridden a pony that would try to lay down and roll every time he stopped which is a little different to the usual problematic ponies. I have ridden young, green horses too including geldings and mares. I have ridden these types of horses on the flat and jumping, small jumping competitions and XC.
Competition Details
I used to work at a competition yard called Coombelands Equestrian. I used to work as arena party in the showjumping part of the business. The business also has a large open space for gallops and a xc course. When working at coombelands I have had to let riders in and out of the arena, do course changes, ensure the arena is safe and clean and catch any horses that have maybe gone loose. This included working in the main jumping arena and the warm up arena.
