Equine Work Experience
I have had experience of owning 2 horses with varying veterinary needs for over 10 years, as well as working with horses since I was 16. I have had experience in the equine industry from a range of different angles, including looking after horses at livery yards, working on a riding school and becoming involved in teaching, and working in a veterinary hospital. Within my veterinary hospital role, I gained a range of useful skills including competencies in trailer driving, driving farm machinery such as tractore and gaitors as well as learn about isolation and biosecurity measures for infectious disease. I also gained a wealth of knowledge in providing equine husbandry in a veterinary setting, including tailoring care to unique and individual patient needs.
At university, I became passionate about the sport of horseball, where I played competitively with my university team, and was a horseball manager for my society for 2 years.
Specialities
In my Equine Technician role at the RVC, I’ve had experience handling mares and foals helping to safely restrain foals for administering injections or moving for veterinary procedures, as well as worked with stallions for lameness work ups.
In my role at Sandridgebury Riding School, I had responsibility as a senior member of the team with supervising colleagues and volunteers at weekends, ensuring horses were prepared for lessons and being handled in an appropriate and safe manner.
Type of Ride Work
In riding my own horses, I had an interest in flat work, though I have some limited experience jumping. I learnt to broke my own horse in and brought his education on by having lessons on a regular basis up to a point of prelim level. At university, I did become involved with the sport of horseball, competing with other university teams and running the horseball branch of my university’s horse riding society.
As a child, I had some riding lessons and gained experience of parelli horsemanship.
Competition Details
I briefly worked at the Holt Livery Yard as a stop gap between jobs, which was run by a dressage rider with focus on dressage and competition.
