Equine Work Experience
Stable Hand/ Groom at The Orchard Equestrian Academy Here I was responsible for the maintenance of cleanliness on the yard and the mucking out of 12 stables, alongside monitoring and maintaining the health and welfare of all 12 horses in my care. Newton Stud, Devon This involved catching pregnant mares, recipient mares and donor mares for check-ups using both rectal palpation and ultrasound; Artificial Insemination; Embryo Transfer and Lavage. I also aided in the foaling of a black filly and tested the quality of the mother’s colostrum and took part in the daily running of the yard. Shared a Horse This experience strengthened my animal handling skills by working with strong horses alongside the horse I shared and allowed me to acquire knowledge in equine welfare and husbandry.
Specialities
Whilst at university my favourite lectures were on equine reproduction and I have a genuine interest in stud management. We did quite a few dissections and assignments on equine reproductive anatomy and a lot of research into modern reproductive techniques such as AI. I absolutely loved my 3 weeks work experience at Newton stud yard in Devon, where I felt I really thrived.
Type of Ride Work
Age 14 to 18 I mainly rode ponies such as cobs and welsh section D's and took part in friendly jumping competitions between yards in my area. Whilst attending University, I helped friends on my course by exercising their horses. Here I rode larger horses such as ex-racers, warmbloods and even a german sport-horse. Whilst working at The Orchard Equestrian Academy I also did a fair amount of flatwork and polework as well as hacking out with some of the riding school horses that were in my care.
Competition Details
I haven't got much competition experience as when I shared a horse I only took part in friendly competitions between yards in my area. This was due to lack of funds and a trailer. However I would love the opportunity to learn more about the behind the scenes of competitions through grooming and be able to improve my riding to competition level.
