Duties of Current Occupation
I am currently doing freelance writing work. My previous horse positions have included working for Wind Song Farm and Summerwind Farm. I have experience as both groom and stable hand.
Equine Work Experience
I have 10+ years of experience with horses. I've cleaned stalls, emptied and cleaned water buckets and troughs, been responsible for feeding hay/grain/pellets, supplements, worming, and have ordered feed/shavings. I can give IM and IV shots, bandage, and wrap. I am able to provide basic levels of health care such as caring for open wounds not requiring stitches, dealing with sore muscles, sore backs, abscesses, etc.
I am comfortable turning horses out and bringing them in, grooming, lunging, exercising, and training. I have experience with Oldenburgs, Holsteiners, Friesians, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Dutch Harness Horses, Arabians, Appaloosas, and Andalusians, among others. I have some experience with foals and am comfortable handling well-behaved stallions.
I also have experience working as a groom for various dressage trainers. I can also clip (intermediate) and braid.
Specialities
I trained a "difficult" green-broke Oldenburg to first with second moves (injury prevented further progression) and also trained him to be a solo trail horse. I trained a spooky, head-shy Appaloosa to a voice-command children's lesson horse. I retrained an OTTB ex-showjumper to a first with second moves dressage horse (injury prevented further progression).
I've also studied biomechanics and how to use that method to rehab injured horses under Kirsten Nelson.
Type of Ride Work
Most of my riding experience has been with dressage, though I do have some experience with hunters. From a young age, I would be given the "problem" horses in lesson programs to ride. Some of the issues I dealt with include spinning, grabbing the bit and running, spooking, refusals to transition (up or down), etc.
Over the years, almost every horse I've ridden would be considered either green or a problem horse.
