Duties of Current Occupation
Main duties include single-handedly caring for ranch horses and checking cattle regularly for signs of distress or disease. Stall cleaning and general barn duties are performed regularly as well as grounds maintenance and fence upkeep.
Equine Work Experience
I have worked previously with lesson horses at show facilities including turn-out, feeding schedules, medication and vaccination distribution, and scheduling other employees around other jobs and classes to make sure all horses are cared for daily. I then moved on to work for a cattle ranch after interning over the summers. Independent work is mandatory with tacking up and checking cattle regularly but has also included sorting, working the chute, helping with semen inspection and vaccinations, and working the feed truck. I have interned with Michelle Altmeyer at Avalo Farms in South Carolina and Fresh Start Sporthorses in California and have also had the pleasure to work sales for Lazy E in Guthrie, Oklahoma and Heritage Place. I also partake in the Oklahoma State University Polo Club as an extracurricular activity which includes traveling for games or horse care when team members travel and introducing the sport to others.
Specialities
Working with foals and broodmares throughout breeding season and handling stallions are things I'm very familiar with. I have worked with many young horses from weanlings up to preparation for first rides and also have experience handling mustangs and untamed horses. I have experience working a breeding season as a student which included broodmare care, preparation for foaling, foal-watch, cleaning and checking the placenta, navel dips and IgG testing, insemination, and cycle tracking.
Type of Ride Work
Most of my experience in training has been starting young horses on the ground in preparation for first rides. I regularly ride cutting and ranch horses for cattle work including forward younger horses. The polo horses used for the university are forward horses that are older and often testy with their riders. I have had little experience jumping during internships but have had a decent amount of dressage exposure.
Competition Details
I have worked for a boarding facility that competed, but have never formally been a show groom. I have competed in a schooling eventing show but have not competed nor been part of any recognized shows other than attending.
