I am looking to start my BHS stage 1 if I can secure the funds and find a suitable centre to undertake it .
Duties of Current Occupation
((Looking to relocate)) Grooming, feeding, mucking out, tacking up, catching, leading in lessons. I haven't a chance to try trimming/plaiting/clipping/other show turnout skills, but being an artist, I am neat-fingered and keen to learn practically.
Equine Work Experience
I began caring for a Traveller woman's horse on a casual basis aged 10-11. I've worked at a small London riding school from roughly the age of 12-20 years old, grooming, mucking out, tacking up, rugging up, tack cleaning, assisting/leading riders etc. I have also worked with Edmund DeFreitas' racehorses and ponies in Trinidad and Tobago. I have just attained a Distincton in the Level 2 NVQ that was part of my apprenticeship (I applied for Horse Care, was later forced to switch to Animal Care due to course provider error, but was allowed to heavily focus my coursework on horses).
Being on the autistic spectrum, I feel I pick up on many nonverbal cues from horses and empathise with riders with special needs including sensory or communication issues. Thoroughness and diligence in everything right down to perfectly leveling the muckheap. Experience with other animals (alpacas, bantams, ducks, geese, peafowl, sheep, goats, pigs etc.) and can milk by hand.
Type of Ride Work
I had regular lessons from the ages of 12-19 (a few position issues because of musculoskeletal problems). Walk, trot, canter. Had begun jumping/drill riding/dressage a year or so before I stopped riding. I have had a handful of one off lessons/hacks since then and am extremely keen to get back to where I was in the saddle and to progress beyond; particularly road work skills in hand such as lunging that I was supposed to learn on my last course but hopefully could in future on a BHS course.
