Bio
I am a fast learner, and am completely willing to go into an area where I have no experience yet. I have worked as a groom as part of the Kentucky Equine Management Internship, and am looking for eventual office work.Duties of Current Occupation
Care of Thoroughbreds - mares, foals, yearlings. All duties pertaining to a working broodmare and sales prep operation. Managing a medium-small staff, scheduling vaccinations and deworming, working closely with veterinarians and farriers.
Equine Work Experience
I have 10 years of experience with horses, with the last four paid.
Assistant Manager: A comprehensive postition overseeing the care and management of 70 pregnant Thoroughbred mares, their subsequent foals, a handful of yearlings, and 2-3 riding geldings. Foaling of the mares, both solo and as a team. Recognizing problems with the horses such as colic, hemorrhage, contracted tendons and deviated angles in foals, and general 'off' behavior (fevers, lameness, etc). Handling everything from fractious newborns to hotheaded teaser stallions. Teasing mares. Keeping careful track of body condition of different classes of horses (racehorse layups vs broodmares). Sales work calling cards and showing for potential buyers.
Summer Camp Counselor: Working in a team to care for 70+ camp horses. I taught group lessons to raw beginners through intermediate-advanced riders. Conditioning of camp horses both physically and mentally, as they were not all 'trail'-quality horses.
Specialities
- Body condition monitoring + Medicating (IV/IM/oral) + General first aid (leg wrapping, post-surgical care, colic) + Managing small staff + Foaling and postnatal care of mare and foal + Scheduling vaccinations/deworming + Sales preparation (Thoroughbred auction) + Sales showman + Diving tractor/weedeating/minor maintenance repairs + General barn cleanliness + Riding lessons (raw beginner to intermediate-advanced, English/Western) + Working with children + Working with clients professionally
Type of Ride Work
I had lessons in western riding when I was younger, and rode english while working at a summer camp. General conditioning work, small-medium fences (3-4 feet), but I have never been 'show' trained.
